Do they still exist? Real adventures? The ones we'll still be talking about many years from now over a glass of Gin Sul Tonic? We, the team at Altona Spirit Manufacture, wanted to find out. And with great wanderlust, we set off on our journey. Our destination: the Cape Verde Islands. We wanted wind around our noses and salt on our skin. We wanted to taste, smell, and feel the adventure. And create a special edition that is just that: an adventure in a bottle.

Ilhas do Sul will be available from 10/18/2022.

On course to the Islands
The special edition Ilhas do Sul took us to the West African archipelago with Portuguese roots: Cape Verde. We were looking for: the best ingredients for our special edition. We found: a place of longing full of colors, smells, music and the best flavors in the world.
Limited to 7,000 bottles
The handle cork is made of teak and is reminiscent of a ship deck. Decorated with a compass, it points the way to the next adventure. However, it is not recommended for Atlantic crossings. Each of the only 7,000 bottles is numbered by hand.
Extraordinary Botanicals
For Ilhas do Sul aromatic bananas, exotic guavas, fresh limes, oranges, and, of course, juniper was macerated with alcohol from sugar cane and then distilled. Dry Gin, 45% vol, 500ml. The recommended retail price remains unchanged at 79,90€.
Cape Verde: Fifteen islands in the middle of the Atlantic, each unique in
its own way. We wanted to discover them up close: by sea, on a sailboat,
from island to island. Always in our luggage: curiosity about enchanting
people, melancholic music, and diverse nature. And the prospect of the
best ingredients for our special edition 2022: Ilhas do Sul.
Our Cape Verde-inspired special edition tells of the sounds of the morna on São Vicente, the precious sweetness of fruits wrested from the dry volcanic soils, and the infectious joie de vivre of the people we met on the Cape Verde Islands.
The journey can begin:
Always along the trade winds
Alone on a wide sea - no problem if an ice-cold Gin Sul Tonic is waiting in the harbor. Until then, our seafaring arts in the depths of the Atlantic will be accompanied by many a rough breeze. Max, our
inhouse navigator, initiates us into the lore of the wind.
The Ship
In Mindelo Marina, a popular port between mainland Europe and the Caribbean, we board our home for the coming days:
a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 449.
The melody of melancholy
When the sun sets in Mindelo on São Vicente, you can hear the traditional Cape Verdean morna, the music that is somewhat reminiscent of Portuguese fado. Its most famous voice and daughter of the city: Cesária Évora. But also modern rhythms and casual interpretations of the melancholy sounds conquer the clubs of the city.
Honest, affordable, and produced under adverse conditions: Grogue, the sugar cane liquor of the islanders. At Vale do Paúl on Santo Antão, we learn all about the ins and outs of grogue production. As distillers, we are curious: What inspirations does grogue, the national drink of Cape Verde,
offer us? We want to discover new things, open our eyes, ears and hearts wide.
An aromatic homage
The higher you climb, the greener it gets: We found it, the "Verde" in "Cabo Verde". The north side of Monte Gordo on São Nicolau is a paradise for agriculture. Here we also find the typical fruits of Cape Verde: Bananas.
The bananas of São Nicolau are among the most aromatic we have ever tasted. They are the main ingredient of our macerate. In spite of the wind that troubles the banana trees, the fruits are an olfactory and gustatory explosion.
In the artists' quarter of Mindelo, we meet a longtime companion of GIN SUL: Tobias Tietchen. This colorful full-blooded creative has been with us almost from the beginning. In the colorful hustle and bustle of the city, he goes in search of inspiration for the design of Ilhas do Sul. And along the way, he beautifies our distiller Rafael.
A journey of the senses
Life in Cape Verde has all the colors: African and Portuguese influences combine to create entirely new compositions. Lust for life and melancholy radiate from everywhere:
Houses, markets, streets.
The best thing about Cape Verde: the people's joie de vivre, their humor, their hospitality. Good humor is a way of life here: even if things don't go perfectly, you always see the good in things.
At the end of the trip we learned one thing: Yes, they still exist, the real adventures. And it's worth taking a chance on one. Because in the end you can only win: New Impressions, New Friends and a Special Edition that preserves all this in the bottle.
