Caminho do Sul França

The GIN SUL Special Edition 2021

OFF TO PROVENCE

The road of the south to the scent of the south - For us, this usually means the scent of the Algarve in Portugal. But this year, when we were finally able to travel a little, we set out to find out what the scent of the south tastes like at our neighbours around the Mediterranean. Heading south towards the sun. We missed it so much! Chrischi and Manuel set off on their journey to Provence in our old R4 van. Perfume and spirits? Surely they have something in common ...

THE SCENT OF FRANCE: THE PERFUME
OF NATURE

Fields of lavender stretching to the horizon, oleander in bloom, the delicate scent of roses, and cedars that charm with their Mediterranean scent in the midday heat. This makes the heart of distiller Manuel beat faster. So what can we take away from the perfume experts from the south of France, that we could implement into our work? An exchange of the most delicate kind between an experienced lavender distiller and a well-traveled perfume designer in Provence.

The Bottle

"Caminho do Sul" is Portuguese for the "Road of the South." Bottled
in the typical Gin Sul clay bottles, the dry gin is limited to 3,000 bottles and has a stamp as a the cork plug. The Latin word "gallus" means both "rooster" and "Gaul" and has therefore been a symbol of France since ancient times.

The Team

Chrischi (left) and distiller Manuel (right) set off for Provence in
the summer of 2021. The retractable bar from our old R4 had to
stay at home in order to make room for new impressions and
lots of lavender.

THE LAVENDER DISTILLERY
"VALLON DES LAVANDES"

Together with her husband Thierry, Sylvie Barjot runs the business founded by her grandfather way back in 1947. They distill high-quality essential oils for perfume production from true lavender and lavandin from their own cultivation.

The kettle holds one ton of lavender per still.

The farm of Sylvie Barjot boasts a wonderful lavender scent. Harvesting takes place in mid-summer, when the lavender has dried up in the fields.

A LANDSCAPE LIKE A PAINTING: PROVENCE.

If only photos could preserve scents. The endless lavender fields near Valensole.

True Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) has always been native to the coastal areas of the Mediterranean. It is harvested between the end of
June and early July. Its beguiling fragrance is best appreciated in high Provence, if only because of the extensive areas under cultivation.
True Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), often simply called "lavender", is a plant species of the genus Lavandula within the Lamiaceae family.
It is cultivated mainly for the extraction of fragrances. Or as in our case: for an exquisitely floral gin.

»La Fourgonnette«

The natural habitat of our "Quatrelle": Here in the south of France, our Renault 4 panel van - also known to
connoisseurs as "Fourgonnette" - feels right at home. Since the founding of GIN SUL, it has been in
the service of the Altonaer Spirituosen Manufaktur.

Lavender becomes the most important ingredient for our gin.

IN THE PERFUMER’S GARDEN:
A VISIT TO DELPHINE THIERRY
IN GRASSE.

Delphine Thierry has seen the world and yet has returned to the place of
longing for her craft: to Grasse, the capital of perfume making. In her
atelier she creates the most extraordinary fragrances and gives
us a deep, impressive insight into the world of perfume.

We are thrilled and recognize many similarities to the art of distillation.
Thank you Delphine, for this wonderful day .

As a perfumer, Delphine Thierry specializes in developing fragrances for small but exquisite niche brands.

THE BOTANICALS

In selecting the botanicals, we have not
only taken our cue from the flora of Provence, but have also drawn on the perfumer's wealth of experience.
All botanicals are also used in perfume production: Juniper, Cedarwood, Cardamom, Lemongrass, Lavender
and Rose buds.

THE TASTING NOTES

Floral bouquet of fresh juniper and ripe lavender from Provence. Delicate nuances
of rose buds underscore the aromatic floral aroma. Lingering on the palate is the cedar reminiscent of sweet vanilla. Nuances of fresh cardamom and sparingly dosed lemongrass round out the complex, extremely mild finish.

The Design

For Caminho do Sul, we were once again able to win over Hamburg-based tattoo artist Tobias Tietchen gewinnen. Thank you Tobi!
